It can be concerning when you notice your child is struggling, whether with concentration, learning or getting along with others. Taking the first step toward understanding the issue can feel overwhelming, but it’s an act of love and advocacy for your child.
If your child’s struggles persist, a psychological assessment can provide the clarity you need. This process is designed to create a detailed picture of your child’s unique strengths and challenges, offering a clear path toward the right support for their educational, developmental and mental health needs. At Bryant West Psychology, we view this process as a partnership with you and your family.
What Is a Psychological Assessment?
A psychological assessment is a collaborative and individualized process that includes testing methods such as interviews and standardized tests. A psychologist can gain a comprehensive understanding of your child by focusing on the specific concerns that led you to seek support.
At Bryant West, our psychologists are skilled at making this process feel engaging and comfortable for children. Sessions are structured to feel less like a test and more like a series of interactive activities and conversations. We also believe in a collaborative approach from start to finish, where your insights as a parent are a crucial part of the assessment.
For your child, an assessment may explore areas like:
- Intelligence and cognitive skills: These tests can identify any developmental delays, intellectual giftedness, and learning disabilities. We work to gain insights into how your child processes new information, their language and communication skills, and their nonverbal reasoning abilities.
- Academic achievement: By measuring your child’s current abilities in reading, mathematics and writing, these tests can highlight academic strengths and pinpoint specific learning challenges. For children who require additional support, this information is essential for developing an effective Individualized Education Program (IEP).
- Memory and attention: Neuropsychological testing can aid in identifying many memory and attention disorders, such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). These tests can measure memory, reasoning and executive functioning skills like planning and organization.
- Behavioral, emotional and social development: This part of the assessment helps determine if challenges with depression, anxiety or social skills are contributing to difficulties at home or school. This aspect of testing can also uncover more significant neuro-developmental issues. The results provide clear direction for behavioral management strategies, a supportive treatment plan, and can be used to obtain important services to which your child may be entitled.
How Do I Know if My Child Needs Psychological Testing?
While some parents seek testing based on their own observations, others are referred by professionals like pediatricians. It’s normal for children to act out or face challenges, but it’s helpful to pay attention to the frequency, duration and age-appropriateness of these behaviors. If they begin to interfere with daily life and learning, an assessment may be the right next step.
Here are a few signs to be aware of:
A Noticeable Change in Behavior
Drastic shifts in your child’s sleeping, eating or grooming habits, or a sudden drop in grades at school can signal underlying issues. While childhood is a time of change, it’s important to distinguish between typical developmental phases and more concerning shifts. An open line of communication is essential to understanding what your child is experiencing.
Struggles in Multiple Areas of Life
If you notice your child is having a hard time across several areas at once — such as with friendships, school performance and family relationships — it may point to a larger issue they are trying to navigate. For example, a child who is suddenly struggling in school may also be avoiding friends and arguing more at home. A psychologist can uncover the root cause of these interconnected challenges.
Withdrawal From Social Activities

Pay attention if your child has been increasingly isolating themselves from friends and family or has lost interest in activities they once loved. While a shy or introverted personality isn’t a cause for concern on its own, a significant shift from their usual behavior may warrant a conversation with a professional. It’s important not to dismiss these changes as “just a phase.”
Regressive Behaviors
Major life events, like a move or the birth of a sibling, can sometimes cause a child to regress temporarily. However, if behaviors like tantrums, excessive clinginess, or bedwetting appear without a clear cause or persist for an extended period, it could indicate an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

NOT A GREAT TITLE – But can we add something here? Thanks
Signs of Self-Destructive or Violent Behavior
If your child is engaging in any form of self-harm, such as digging their nails into their skin or pulling their hair, seek professional support immediately. These behaviors are often an outward sign of deep emotional pain that the child doesn’t know how to express. A psychologist can help your child learn to identify, express, and manage their emotions in a healthy, safe way.
The Lasting Benefits of Child and Adolescent Psychological Assessments
Early psychological assessments are powerful tools for understanding a child’s developmental path. They provide invaluable insights that allow for timely, effective support, which can significantly and positively impact your child’s future. Key benefits include:
- A clear path forward: By accurately identifying developmental delays or learning challenges, child and adolescent psychological assessments provide clarity and direction. The comprehensive report you receive is more than just a diagnosis — it’s a practical roadmap with actionable recommendations that you, your child’s school, and their therapist can use to build a supportive environment.
- Timely and effective support: Early psychological testing leads to timely intervention. The sooner a challenge is identified, the sooner strategies and therapies can be implemented to prevent it from becoming more pronounced over time.
- Customized educational planning: Child and adolescent psychological testing provides the detailed information needed to create customized educational strategies, such as IEPs. This ensures your child receives support in school that is tailored to their unique strengths, enhancing their learning experience and academic success.
- Document the need for appropriate accommodations and necessary services: At times school evaluations may not capture what you are certain you are seeing in your child and services might be denied your child. Testing by an outside examiner can help you fight for services and accommodations that your child may be entitled to receive.
- Improved long-term outcomes: Children who receive early and appropriate support are more likely to achieve better long-term outcomes, including improved cognitive development, stronger academic performance and enhanced social skills.
- Reduced need for intensive interventions later: Addressing challenges early can reduce the need for more intensive interventions later in life. This can help your child integrate into mainstream educational and social environments with greater ease, leading to higher levels of self-confidence and feelings of belonging.
