Welcome! My name is Lynsey Hinnenkamp, and I am a Postdoctoral Fellow at Bryant West Psychology. I work with adults from diverse backgrounds, providing both individual and couples therapy. I offer in-person sessions in Midtown West and virtual appointments throughout New York State.
My clinical specialties focus on individuals who have experienced trauma, including military, childhood, sexual, physical, complex, and religious trauma. I also support people navigating grief and loss, relationship challenges, anxiety and mood concerns, life transitions, sexuality, and identity-related questions. In addition to individual therapy, I enjoy working with couples to identify recurring conflict cycles, strengthen communication, rebuild trust, and deepen emotional and physical connection.
I place great emphasis on the therapeutic relationship, as a genuine, deep, collaborative connection is often central to healing. I strive to create a space that feels warm, thoughtful, and emotionally safe, where difficult experiences can be explored with curiosity and care. My work is grounded in a holistic and non-pathologizing perspective, honoring how your unique lived experiences shape the way you move through the world. I welcome clients from diverse backgrounds and identities and am committed to providing care that is culturally responsive, inclusive, and sex-positive. Together, we will explore patterns in emotions and relationships, including how past experiences, especially those in relationships, may continue to shape present-day ways of coping, connecting, and understanding yourself and others. Throughout our work, we will identify the values and directions that feel most meaningful to you moving forward.
My therapeutic approach is integrative and relational, drawing from interpersonal and emotion-focused frameworks while incorporating evidence-based treatments when helpful, including DBT, ACT, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Prolonged Exposure (PE). My work with couples draws from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) – approaches that help partners slow down, recognize the cycles they get caught in, and better understand the emotions and needs beneath their conflicts. Together, couples learn to communicate more openly, respond to each other with greater empathy, and rebuild trust and connection. I do not view therapy as a one-size-fits all, and therefore, we will work together to find a path towards healing that fits your unique values, goals, and lived experiences.
I have lived in many states along the east coast, from New York all the way down to Louisiana. I earned my PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, after completing a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Loyola University and studying psychology, public health, and gender and sexuality studies at Tulane University. I completed my doctoral internship at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx, where I worked with Veterans and their families. I have also provided psychotherapy and assessment across the lifespan in community mental health, college counseling, hospital, and school settings.
Wherever you find yourself right now, it would be a privilege to support you in the process of understanding, healing, and growth. I invite you to reach out if you would like to explore how we might work together.
