I am Susan Fournier (she/her), a New York State Licensed Psychologist with ten years of experience. I work with adults of all ages, primarily in individual psychotherapy. My work is tailored to your unique needs. As we progress, I am keenly interested in your feedback and your evolving needs so that I can bring in approaches that will best move you toward your goals. My work is humanistic because I recognize that you carry significant strengths based on a lifetime of experience. Yet sometimes methods of coping that helped at earlier times in your life may become self-defeating later and may impede your progress through life, resulting in symptoms and suffering. Exploring such patterns, gaining insight, and restoring flexibility to your coping might create growth opportunities where there has been stagnation and frustration. Aside from insight, I also utilize specific evidence-based approaches to treatment, such as CBT and motivational interviewing.

I have practiced in community mental health, residential treatment centers, and skilled nursing facilities throughout my career. I have worked with persons of diverse backgrounds and value all aspects of your identity - particularly those marginalized in your family, community, and/or society. Such experiences often create distress and even trauma, but also resiliency and vitality. I am interested in both aspects and how to integrate them into our work. I have worked with folks suffering from depression, anxiety, personality disorders, past trauma including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, problems of living with health conditions, and women’s issues, particularly in our current socio-political environment.

I am a down-to-earth clinician, and my goal is always to understand you and work with you to determine the best way forward in our work. I look forward to beginning your journey of self-discovery, growth, and self-compassion as a path to living your life to its fullest.
