Hi there; I’m Abbey Friedman, a post-doctoral fellow at Bryant West. I offer individual, family, and couples therapy both in-person in NYC and via telehealth throughout New York State. I work with a diverse population across the lifespan, including children (3+), teens, families, and adults of all ages.

My training and experience has focused on using evidence-based treatments to support those struggling with serious behavioral difficulties, obsessive-compulsive disorders, anxiety, depression and mood disorders; those coping with interpersonal and socio-cultural/systemic stress; and those who have survived trauma, both acute and chronic. I have also frequently worked with youth (and their caregivers) experiencing functional problems related to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct problems, childhood-onset anxiety disorders, and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

My perspective is predominately through a cognitive-behavioral lens, though I acknowledge the importance of how someone’s identity, relationships, day-to-day life, and access to various resources might influence their beliefs and perceptions of the world around them. I flexibly incorporate other skills, perspectives, and techniques that would support a clients’ ability to gain a deeper awareness of their inner cognitions, develop mastery in coping with difficult emotions, and find peace in accepting the things that may not change.

I received my PhD from Temple University and completed my clinical internship at Mount Sinai. I have worked across a variety of treatment settings, including community mental health and outpatient programs, inpatient and other hospital-based programs, school-based programs, and specialty clinics for youth with anxiety disorders (Child and Adolescent Anxiety Disorders Clinic) and ADHD (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia).

I believe in a collaborative approach between client and clinician. My goal is to foster a safe, nonjudgemental space where, together, we can explore your treatment goals, process challenges you’ve faced, and address barriers to making meaningful change. Starting therapy can feel scary, so I hope to create an environment where you’re comfortable being yourself (with plenty of room for humor and compassion). I invite you to reach out to discuss working together toward a life less burdened by troubling symptoms and behavioral roadblocks. I would be honored to join you on your journey.
