Mary Pat Wachter, Ph.D.

Anxiety, depression, COVID-19, concerns about the future, financial worries, children, aging parents, climate change…our world is full of uncertainty, and asking for help reveals strength, not weakness.

I am a New York State licensed clinical psychologist who will work with you in an empathic, collaborative environment to help you feel less overwhelmed by the issues that consume you. Using a directive, cognitive behavioral approach, I will help you create a “toolbox” to better cope with feelings that can overwhelm and paralyze you.

I am experienced in evidence-based interventions such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Sex and Marital Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, short-term therapy, and group therapy. I specialize in working with people suffering from Anxiety Disorders, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Depression, Suicidal Ideation, grief and suicide, parent-child relational issues, communication issues, life transitions, and coping skills. I have worked in various settings, including hospitals and clinics such as NYU Child Study Center and the Institute of Geriatric Psychiatry at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, parenting centers, and correctional facilities. The populations I work with are adults (including elders), adolescents, and LGBQT individuals.

Anxiety is rooted in fear, and by following the fear, we can learn what is most important to us. Understanding that fear, confronting it, and learning to cope with it will reduce anxiety and help you live a more fulfilling, meaningful, and balanced life. I look at how one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors interact to create maladaptive coping strategies and poor ability to regulate one’s emotions.

“Most people live in fear because they bring the past into the future.” Michael Jordan
